Those who are interested in adopting a Siberian cat will want to find out everything they need to know, to check if the breed will be compatible with them and their surroundings. Many owners say that Siberians are very expressive and vocal, but is this really true? Here’s what I’ve learned.

Siberian cats are in fact very talkative and they don’t shy away from making their voices heard. They are not the most vocal cat breed, but they do have a strong communicative ability. While some Siberian cats utter sounds of affection some screech and are very loud and unpleasant. It’s basically a breed-related trait with few exceptions.

Siberian cats are extremely intelligent, they are able to learn new tricks and understand simple instructions. These cats are able to comprehend vocalizations and common words that are used repetitively within their environment.

They pick up on a lot of things and they will eventually learn the actions associated with specific words. Their ability to adapt adds to their talkative nature, as they are able to differentiate affectionate vocalizations from aggressive vocalizations in different situations.

Ultimately Siberian cats are talkative as it’s a part of their breed-related characteristics. So if you intend on adopting a Siberian cat make sure you understand the possible risks and challenges associated with the breed.

Are All Siberian Cats Talkative?

So far we’ve established the communicative nature of the Siberian cat breed. They are amongst the most chatty breeds from all other felines, however, this does not mean that all Siberians are talkative.

For example, Some Siberian cats will utter soft chirps, purrs, and warm meows when they are happy and satisfied. Normally, when they are given food or feeling affectionate, is when they initiate conversations.

Other Siberians often, yell, coo, and even harshly meow when they disapprove of something. Some owners also say that their Siberian cats become aggressively vocal when they want to be carried or are not given what they want.

On the other hand, you do get few exceptions of cats who are just very chatty irrespective of the situations they will remain chatty. Likewise, you will also come across some cats who are just quiet and peaceable.

Therefore, just because the breed is generally quite talkative, it’s not a trait found in every Siberian cat since some cats are more expressive than others.

Meaning Behind Siberian Cats Vocalizations.

There are many reasons why your cat may become vocal, most of the time it has to do with how they feel. So depending on their current mood or sentiment they will react accordingly in an expressive way.

Here’s what different vocalizations generally mean. Note this is subjective to each cat as I’m sharing from my experience.

Chirps and Purrs.

These sounds are generally associated with a cat that is satisfied and comfortable. It’s almost like a sign of happiness and pleasure that they use to express their current mood.

For example, when they are lying comfortably in the bed when you refill their food bowls, or even when you encourage playtimes.

Meows and thrills.

Meows can mean just about anything, they may need something, may not be happy with something, or something is not right. At times a Siberian cat may meow just to get things their way.

For example, being picked up or they probably want attention. During playtimes, the thrills can also show up as well as other slurs.

Coos, yowl, and Yells.

These noises to me sometimes sound like a full-blown argument. Almost like you being shouted at for something they need or for something they disapprove of. At times it can basically be for no apparent reason.

But it’s important to always analyze the situation and make sure the cat is fine and not in any kind of pain. Once you covered all the basics, allow them time to express themselves the way they want to.

Some spoilt cats use these strong vocalizations to get what they want, they may even become persistent with these sounds until you give them what they want.

In such cases, try to discourage this behavior even if they get persistent.

Reasons For a Talkative Siberian Cat?

It can be very difficult to understand what your cat may need at times since they are not able to accurately express themselves. While there are some common reasons you can think of, it’s important to get to know your cat.

In this way, you can become aware of how they express themselves and understand what they really want when they utter certain slurs.

Here are 5 common reasons for a talkative Siberian cat.

1. Hungry – Your cat may want food or is not satisfied with the serving portions. This is common because Siberian cats are bigger than normal and will require more calories to maintain their bodies.

2. Thirsty – Due to their great athletic ability, it’s common for Siberians to consume more water, thus getting thirsty more often.

3. Attention – Siberians are very social and they require interaction and affection. If you work and are not at home during the day it’s common for your cat to be super vocal when you come back as they require playtime or some soothing cuddles.

4. Sick or in Pain – Cats cannot speak so when they are not well they cannot accurately express themselves. A cat that is in pain will be moody, loud, and persistent. Be sure to always stay alert and seek veterinary assistance.

5. Bored – A bored Siberian cat is a recipe for disaster as these cats are very smart and without stimulation, they will become very loud and destructive. Normal toys won’t fulfill their instinctive urge, they require toys that are motion sensored which will stimulate their natural hunting ability.

Ways To Deal With A Noisy Cat.

Cats normally vocalize when they need something, in pain or disapprove of certain behaviors. However from what we know about the siberian breed is that they are also attention seekers.

Most of the time these chatty conversations and slurs will be aimed at getting attention. Its understandable knowing that these cats are very social and loves human interaction.

However at times your Siberian may get persistently vocal making it unpleasant and irritating. Before you go further you want to make sure they are well fed, and have all they need. You also want to make sure they are properly stimulated and not in pain.

Now that you checked and are sure your cat is vocalizing for no apparent reason, it’s time to deal with this attention seeking behaviors.

Here are few ways to deal with this behavior.

1.Resist the urges and vocalizations by ignoring it. At times its unpleasant and can really make you feel irritable but stay cool and unbothered.

2. Dont give any attention, as your reaction will be seen as giving in to their urge. At times this noisy behavior is also followed by clinginess, which you must ignore.

3. Understand that excessive vocalizations is a learned behavior and is aimed at getting what they want. Owners normally give in to this behavior just to stop the noise, but this make the cat learn that their demands are given if they become loud and persistent. Which they will use the next time they want something.

4. Never encourage the cat by engaging in chatty conversation. This will encourage them to go louder.

5. If this excessive noises become an habits you want to consult with a behavioral specialist to seek other possible solutions.
